The success of microsurgery stands or falls by the recognition of minute detail (microstructures). During an operation, the surgeon is confronted with many quickly changing situations. For example, he usually needs a high magnification factor for the actual microsurgery. A moment later, he may need a wide field of vision to take an overall look at the area that is being operated on, whereas there are times when a swift change of working distance or working position is necessary.
